Hmmmm! It seems that white forgot about 6...Nf2#.
What if instead of 6Rxe1 white would have played 6 Qxg2+ ?

yes, that was the answer, and Qxg7 looks like a very good move to me.
the game could continue like this with white winning the black knight. In anycase, no matter what happened; after Qxg2, white is in a much better position than being in checkmate.

I don't think 6 Qxg7+ gives White any more than a draw. However 6 Bd5 looks like it probably wins. I haven't analyzed it thoroughly, but after 6...Qc3 then 7 Bxh6 looks very promising: if 7...Bxh6 then 8 Be4 looks like a winner, and if 7...Rg8 then 8 Qh5 looks devastating.
